How the Data was Compiled
The monthly search data was compiled using a script to harvest data from the AdWords Keyword Tool. Consideration was taken for places that share the same name, e.g. Newcstle-upon-Tyne, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Newcastle, Northern Ireland and places that share the same name as settlements in other countries, e.g. Boston and Perth.
The supply (approximate number of SEO service providers in a region) was compiled largely from Yell.com, but also took into account data from Google and Google Maps.

Interesting findings David. It surprises me as I am in the Essex area and almost every small business I speak with has not heard of SEO and Internet Marketing. Search volume may be one thing but it is those who are not in the know that make it far more interesting :)

Yes, there sure are a lot of people who would be interested in SEO if they knew what it was. I'd imagine that a lot of the search volume used in this is people checking their rankings either automatically or manually. Especially for terms like [seo manchester] and [seo london], which is probably inflating the larger areas search volume. Smaller areas such as [seo shropshire] are probably less likely to be searched to check rankings because there are fewer providers in Shropshire and not enough search to make people who live there even bother targeting those terms.
For awhile there I thought you had way too much time on your hands, then I read the bit about having a script do all the work for you. That made a lot more sense. I don't suppose you have a script that can pull posts out of my head and input it into my blog?

Would it be possible to alter the script to collect data which contains search terms for towns/counties? For example maybe 300,000 searches were made for "Jewellery London" and 249,000 searches were made for "Merseyside Handbags"
I am not sure exactly what you mean, but yes it would be possible to do this for other industries.
